Supporting and volunteering at Howell Road allotments

Recently, I spent time volunteering at Howell Road allotments in my ward with MPs Liam Byrne and Pat McFadden in Ettingshall.

We spent time planting apple and pear trees and flowers at the site in Wolverhampton.

And, it’s not just about growing produce, the allotment’s committee talked about the site being a ‘lifeline’ for people during the pandemic.

Some plot-holders who live in flats or apartments with no outdoor or green space spoke about the love of their allotment plot and how it was often the only thing that enabled them to leave the house during this tough time.

And the team have ensured that the allotments are COVID-safe with signage, hand sanitiser and social distancing measures.

Some of the older plot-holders had to self-isolate but it was great how our community pulled together to care for their produce until they returned.

I’m no stranger to Howell Road allotments in my ward. In the last year, I’ve supported the allotments to expand with a donation of £1100 in ward funds to allow more community groups utilise the space.

One of our Council’s key priorities is to make Wolverhampton a vibrant, green city that we can all be proud of.

That’s why I’ve supported Howell Road allotments, I’ve really seen the benefits to both the local area and on people’s well-being.

There are people of all ages who grow produce and there’s a great mix of cultures there, sharing knowledge and experiences.

The City of Wolverhampton currently has over 32 allotment sites across the city with over 1,100 plots.

The Council have created more plots in recent years to meet demand and there is a short waiting time with a quick turnover.

In this respect, we’re bucking the national trend and meeting demand.
