Recruiting a ‘roving’ team of social workers

Last week I was pleased to bring this paper to Cabinet, as a Council we are now recruiting for a ‘roving’ team of social workers to help further improve support for vulnerable children, young people and families.

The peripatetic team of nine social workers will cover temporary vacancies across the council’s statutory social work teams, reducing the council’s reliance on agency workers and enabling temporary posts to be filled in a timely manner.

Children’s social work is now on a national occupational shortage list, with demand for permanent, experienced workers significantly outstripping supply.

In Wolverhampton the vacancy rate, and use of agency workers, is considerably below the national average, thanks to a sustained recruitment and retention campaign over the last few years. Even so, we want to do more to support our social workers to continue their incredible work and the recruitment of a peripatetic team of social workers will bring greater stability to our workforce.
