A Wolverhampton councillor who helped deliver thousands of food parcels and volunteered at a hospital during the pandemic has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Beverley Momenabadi, who represents Ettingshall ward, has made the shortlist for the National Young Councillor of the Year gong for the third year running.

The LGiU & CCLA’s Councillor Achievement Awards for 2020 will take place in a virtual ceremony in November.

The 29-year-old is the youngest member on the authority and was first elected in the ward where she lives in 2018.

She was nominated for this year’s award for her work during the coronavirus outbreak, which involved delivering more than 10,000 food parcels with Excel Church to people in need.

She also spent time as a volunteer at New Cross Hospital when the NHS was experiencing high pressures as a result of the pandemic and secured thousands of pounds in funding for city food banks.

Away from Covid-19, she has also been recognised for her work with Ettingshall allotments on Howell Road.

Councillor Momenabadi has also slept rough for a night for the last four years, helping to collect thousands of pounds for the charity YMCA Black Country Group to support homeless young people across the borough.

She is currently the authority’s Digital Innovation Champion which involves her leading the work to ensure Wolverhampton is “digitally future proofed” for the future.

Councillor Momenabadi said she was delighted to be nominated and hopes it will be a case of third time lucky this year.

She said: “It’s a privilege and honour to serve the community of Ettingshall and the city of Wolverhampton, one which I never take for granted.

“Covid has really taught many of us what it means to serve the community, and this year, I have worked with some amazing organisations to ensure that we do just that.”
