World Blood Donor Day

Today is World Blood Donor Day! Giving blood saves lives and over the last few years, I’ve donated 2.5L of blood and there’s lots of reasons why you should too.

In the UK, we need new blood donors from all backgrounds to ensure there is the right blood available for patients who need it.

To meet demand, we need:

– Nearly 400 new donors a day to meet demand

– Around 135,000 new donors a year to replace those who can no longer donate

– 40,000 more black donors to meet growing demand for better-matched blood

– 30,000 new donors with priority blood types such as O negative every year

The blood given is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments.

Manicure, hair appointment and blood donation. Giving blood is as easy as any other appointment in my diary!

I was a little nervous at the first appointment as I didn’t know what to expect but the staff really make you feel at ease.

I’m now on donation number five and have donated 2.5L of blood so far! The app allows you to track your blood type and the journey of where your blood goes to.

I’d encourage anyone thinking about doing it to download the app or visit the website here: https://www.blood.co.uk/

Appointments last no more than 30 minutes in total and you’re in and out before you know it.

Feeling inspired? Why not start your blood donation journey today!

Remember, giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments.
