Why I think misogyny should be a hate crime

Yesterday, I recorded this video and spoke on air to Free Radio about why I support misogyny becoming a hate crime.

Currently, the Law Commission, which is responsible for reviewing laws, will look at whether those abusing women because of their gender should have tougher sentences.

The reason I support it becoming a hate crime is because misogyny propels crimes against women, and by acknowledging this within our criminal justice system, it will offer more protection for women.

And, I hope that it will prevent violent crimes against women. My own experiences of misogyny range from subtle and disguised to quite extreme.

Yesterday, during my interview with Free Radio, I opened up about some of my personal experiences which are detailed in the video.

Whether misogyny becomes a hate crime or not, we mustn’t ignore the deep societal issues that sexism still presents us with. In the workplace, how many businesses have ‘Boards of Directors’ or ‘Boards of Trustees’ with no women on them? And, the gender pay gap in this country is still alive and kicking.

It’s illogical to abuse someone because of conditions that they’re born with.I didn’t choose to be a woman, I’m proud to be a woman but I shouldn’t be abused for it.

The Law Commission is calling for evidence from victims of hate crimes, police officers, prosecutors and civil liberties groups which will be assessed to help establish how misogyny hate crimes could work in practice.
