Some of you will know that I have recently become the City of Wolverhampton’s Councillor Champion for Digital Innovation. Some of you may be wondering what that entails…

Part of the role will involve me championing the accelerated deployment of digital infrastructure in the city – this includes full fibre and 5G, to maximise the benefits to local people and businesses.

Following an exciting briefing last week, today was my first day on the job! Hard hats and steel toe caps kept us looking glam as I visited Arthur Greenwood Court (Ettingshall) to witness the upgrade of infrastructure to enable 5G technology.

Over the last few months we have seen the first 5G sites go live in Wolverhampton – thanks the work of the City of Wolverhampton Council, working in partnership with WM5G.

As a result of identifying and proactively addressing key obstacles that were blocking the roll-out of 5G sites, the Council has secured the support of multiple mobile operators to launch 5G ahead of schedule.

This makes Wolverhampton one of the first cities in the UK to launch 5G, opening up the opportunities for people across the City to start to benefit from this new technology as the networks extend further in the coming months and years.

We’re committed to make Wolverhampton a leading city for UK connectivity and innovation. Wolverhampton is delighted to be one of the first cities in the UK to launch 5G – thanks to the pioneering efforts of the Council, supported by mobile operators and West Midlands 5G.
